U.S. average on-highway diesel: $6.352 a gallon (U.S. Energy Information Administration, October 26, 2026). Each carrier's name links to the page its figure comes from. These are the carriers' published surcharges; a customer agreement can set a different fuel schedule.
On a Freight Sidekick LTL quote, fuel is already included. The price you see has the carrier's fuel surcharge and the services you select priced in.
How LTL fuel surcharges work
- A percentage of the linehaul. Usually the surcharge applies to the carrier's base charge for moving the freight; some carriers' rules tariffs also apply it to certain extra services.
- Reset weekly. Each carrier sets its percentage from the U.S. Department of Energy's diesel price average and posts the new figure on its own page.
- Each carrier has its own table. The same diesel price gives a different percentage at each carrier, which is why the figures above differ.
Everything else on an LTL bill is in LTL freight charges explained. Truckload uses a per-mile surcharge instead; the fuel surcharge calculator shows that one.
