Hazmat Segregation Chart
Pick the hazard classes going on one truck. The chart checks every pair against the DOT segregation table in 49 CFR 177.848 and tells you which can ride together.
Classes on the truck
Select two or more.
Freight Sidekick doesn't ship Class 1, Class 7, Division 2.3 or any 6.1 inhalation hazard (in any zone). They stay on the chart so the answer is complete.
Allowed, with separation
3 pairs checked
3 Flammable liquid with 5.1 Oxidizer: allowed on the same vehicle only when separated so they cannot mix if packages leak.
5.1 Oxidizer with 8 Corrosive liquid: allowed on the same vehicle only when separated so they cannot mix if packages leak. The Class 8 liquid may not be loaded above or next to it, except in a truckload when the shipper knows the mix would not cause a fire or dangerous heat or gas.
3 Flammable liquid with 8 Corrosive liquid: no segregation restriction.

Source: 49 CFR 177.848(d), edition revised as of October 1, 2025. Applies to packages that must be labeled or placarded, cargo tank compartments and portable tanks. Class 8 liquids may not be loaded above or next to Class 4 or Class 5 materials, except in a truckload when the shipper knows the mix would not cause a fire or dangerous heat or gas. Cyanides may not ride with acids that would release hydrogen cyanide. Ammonium nitrate (UN1942) and ammonium nitrate fertilizer may ride with 1.1 and 1.5, unless 49 CFR 177.835(c) prohibits it. Packages with a POISON or POISON INHALATION HAZARD label or placard may not ride with food, feed or other edibles unless overpacked in a metal drum or loaded in separate closed unit load devices; Packing Group III 6.1 may, if packaged so it can't mix with the food (49 CFR 177.841(e)).

Segregation FAQs
What does X mean on the hazmat segregation chart?
X means the two materials may not be loaded, transported or stored together in the same transport vehicle or storage facility during transportation.
What does O mean on the segregation chart?
O means the materials may share a vehicle only when separated so that, if packages leak under normal transport conditions, they could not mix.
Can flammable liquids and corrosives ride on the same truck?
Yes. The table has no restriction between Class 3 and Class 8 liquids. Class 8 liquids still may not be loaded above or next to Class 4 or Class 5 materials, except in a truckload when the shipper knows the mix would not cause a fire or dangerous heat or gas.
Which shipments does the segregation table apply to?
Packages that must be labeled or placarded under part 172, compartments of multi-compartmented cargo tanks, and portable tanks (49 CFR 177.848(a)).
Ready to ship hazmat freight?
Classes that can't share a truck can still ship as separate loads.
