What Affects Your Cost?
Service Level
High ImpactTeam drivers (two drivers, non-stop) are the fastest but most expensive option, adding ~$0.50/mile plus a $500 flat fee on top of base rates. Hot shot (box truck) is a middle ground. Expedited LTL offers guaranteed transit times at a premium over standard LTL.
Equipment Type
High ImpactStraight box trucks run ~$2.75/mile with a $650 minimum, carrying up to 33,000 lbs. Standard dry van with team drivers costs ~$2.46/mile base ($1.96 + $0.50 team premium) plus $500 flat. Equipment urgency and availability drive pricing.
Lead Time
High ImpactSame-day or next-day pickup commands the highest premiums. 24-48 hour lead time reduces the premium. True emergency freight (must ship immediately) can cost 50-100% more than standard rates.
Distance
Medium ImpactExpedited benefits increase with distance. A team driver covering 1,000+ miles non-stop saves 1-2 days vs a solo driver who must stop for HOS rest breaks (11-hour driving limit). The premium pays for itself on long hauls.
Time of Request
Medium ImpactRequests during business hours on weekdays have better carrier availability. Weekend or holiday pickups carry additional premiums due to limited driver availability.
Load Weight & Size
Medium ImpactLighter, smaller loads can use hot shot box trucks ($2.75/mile). Heavier loads requiring full 53-ft trailers with team drivers cost more. Very heavy expedited loads on flatbed or specialized equipment are premium.
