What Affects Your Cost?
Distance / Short-Haul Premium
High ImpactShorter hauls cost more per mile because loading, unloading and the drive to the pickup are fixed costs. In October 2026 our reefer quotes ran about $3.85-$6.85/mile at 200-500 miles and $2.45-$3.50/mile past 700 miles; under 200 miles loads ran about $1,050-$1,500 in total (the minimum is $775).
Temperature Requirements
High ImpactStandard reefer rates apply for typical temperature ranges. Frozen freight (-10°F to 0°F) and deep freeze (below -10°F) may command slight premiums due to fuel consumption.
Reefer Fuel Costs
Medium ImpactThe refrigeration unit runs on diesel, adding to operating costs. This is built into the base rate but fluctuates with fuel prices.
Lane Direction & Seasonal Demand
Medium ImpactReefer rates are highly directional. Outbound from produce regions (California, Florida, Texas) during harvest season is headhaul and costs more. Return trips are backhaul and cheaper. Holiday seasons (Q4) increase demand for frozen food distribution nationwide.
Extra Stops
Medium ImpactSame as dry van: $175 for first extra stop, $275 for second, $375 for third, $400 each beyond. Temperature monitoring continues through all stops.
Equipment & Monitoring
Low ImpactTemperature monitoring and logging is typically included. Continuous temperature printouts for compliance add minimal cost.
